The Good Samaritan Health Center of Gwinnett (GSHCG) is a non-profit organization operating two full-service clinics which provide low-cost medical, dental, and pharmacy services across the life span of poor and uninsured individuals of the north metropolitan Atlanta area. We also operate a mini clinic within a homeless shelter in Norcross. Our mission is to demonstrate the love of Christ through the provision of health and dental services exclusively targeting the poor and uninsured. Our goals are to provide quality low-cost primary healthcare and dental services to the uninsured, decrease demand of the uninsured for non-emergent services at the emergency room, and provide matriculating healthcare professionals with experience serving disadvantaged populations. Achieving our goals helps to eliminate health disparities for poor and uninsured populations, reduces the cost of indigent care on the public health delivery system, and increases awareness among rising medical professionals of the unique needs and challenges of the poor and uninsured. GSHCG has provided care to more than 33,500 patients since opening its doors in 2005. Inclusive of all reasons for visiting GSHCG, we have logged more than 210,000 customer encounters. With 52 employees and 300+ volunteers, GSHCG expects to deliver 32,000 encounters during 2021, representing a value of approximately $10,000,000 and a local economic impact of $30 Million. Our patients are predominately Hispanic (74%) married (48%) women (64%), almost 41 years old (range: 1-94), with an average household income of $23,607 supporting 3.5 individuals (88% of the federal poverty level for a family of four). Seventy-one percent are employed, and 67 countries of origin are represented. Most patients have utilized the clinic five or more years and will visit 5 times each year. Through the payment of affordable fees, patients provide nearly two-thirds of the organization’s annual operating funds. Historically, evidence of our effectiveness has included increased on-time vaccination of school aged children, increased medication adherence among diabetics with a concurrent reduction in A1C levels, and increased adoption of routine oral health practices, among other measures. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected the health and dental care behaviors of our customers and we have witnessed disruption of care in nearly every aspect of our practice. During 2021, we are committed to reengaging our patients with a focus on improving their health status. GSHCG is widely recognized for its commitment to the care of the poor and underserved. We were named Gwinnett Chamber’s 2019 Healthcare Agency of the Year, received Gwinnett County Board of Commissioner’s 2017 Certificate of Merit, and Gwinnett Chamber’s 2015 Humanitarian Award and 2014 Healthcare Excellence Award.
