Sweet Sleep

Ministry Description
Sweet Sleep exists to disciple and empower women to break the cycle of economic and spiritual poverty for their families, communities, and for generations to come.

Sweet Sleep accomplishes this mission through Christ-centered economic development in Uganda. Our core program, the CO•OP, brings together 10 to 12 widows, single mothers, and grandmothers — women who are already caring for orphaned and vulnerable children with almost nothing. Each group receives business training, startup capital for a market-based cooperative business of their choosing, and seed funding for an internal savings and loan association. The cooperative business builds long-term sustainability; the savings and loan allows women to launch individual businesses with immediate income. The result is a multiplying effect: one investment reaches an entire household — and beyond.

Since 2016, Sweet Sleep has launched 195 CO•OPs, now reaching 2,320 members and more than 15,600 family members across Uganda. Critically, 100% of CO•OPs initiated since 2016 remain fully operational.

The impact goes deeper than economics. Before joining a CO•OP, 62% of members ate just one meal a day — after joining, that number falls to 16%. Fifty-five percent of members have moved above the poverty line. Members report stronger families, greater confidence, and renewed hope: the largest single gain across all indicators is that members are more hopeful about the future.

Sweet Sleep's discipleship strategy employs a trauma-informed, orality-based Gospel curriculum — the Multiplying Hope Series — that not only teaches Biblical truth but trains women to share their faith within their communities. Since Sweet Sleep began tracking discipleship data in 2020, more than 22,440 Gospel conversations have taken place, resulting in 3,212 decisions for Christ.

Looking ahead, Sweet Sleep is developing a working farm on two acres of land in northern Uganda, with construction underway and completion expected by year's end. The long-term goal is for the farm to sustainably fund all Uganda-based operations.

Sweet Sleep also continues its longstanding distribution of beds, Bibles, and mosquito nets to orphaned and vulnerable children. To date, more than 34,940 beds have been placed in children's hands across nine countries.

Can you provide for a pillow? What about a single bed? Maybe you could provide beds for a room full of children. Better still, can you provide beds for an entire orphanage? Consider how you can help bring sweet sleep to orphaned and abandoned children around the world: $3,000 fills one room in a Third-World orphanage; $250 provides one Sweet Sleep bed; $100 provides one new bed frame; $80 provides one mattress and cover; $50 provides one set of sheets and blanket; $20 provides one pillow!
