Voice of China and Asia Missionary Society

Ministry Description
A Short History

With a motto based on Jesus’ words in John 9:4 to “Work for the Night is Coming,” The Voice of China and Asia Missionary Society, Inc. is a US based 501(c)(3) non-profit missions ministry operating in Cambodia, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Our Beginning

Our story begins with a deep love for the Chinese people. Driven by a desire to touch them for Christ, young Albert and Edna Reiton sailed from the United States to Hong Kong in 1909 as “faith missionaries.” Their ministry focused on the poor, the outcasts and the refugees, an enduring standard that still guides us today. Establishing churches, a Bible School and orphanages, their work laid the foundation of what would later become known as the Voice of China and Asia (VOCA).

This work was thrust into the limelight at the beginning of WWII when Hong Kong was bombed on the same day as Pearl Harbor, HI. After weeks of hiding, all of our missionary staff were interred in a Japanese prison camp. Their story is told in the missionary classic, BONDSERVANTS—The Story of the Voice of China and Asia, available through our office upon request.

Upon their repatriation to the United States, the Voice of China and Asia radio broadcast was begun and aired continuously until 1992. Radio partners assisted in post-war efforts that expanded throughout Asia and planted works that continue to this day. The work has grown through a second generation of indigenous missionaries and pastors whose works include: church planting, orphanages, Bible distribution, pastoral training, Christian Education (K-12 Schools and a Seminary).

The Second Hundred Years – Entering New Ministry

In 2008, noting a limited number of Chinese Bibles were being legally printed each year, our focus turned to her 600 million rural poor who were unable to obtain them. It is our goal to provide them our one millionth Bible by 2030.

This ministry also entails Pastor’s Study Bibles for rural preacher and a unique program providing rural circuit-walking preachers with motorcycles.

Other projects at the forefront of our ministry include regular support of the Peniel Seminary in Busan, Korea. To date it has produced over 1,800 graduates working in over 60 denominations, including our 180 Korean churches. Forty-six of these graduates now serve us as foreign missionaries.

Looking Ahead

Most recently VOCA has entered Cambodia, where we sponsor two elementary schools and are building a new Jr. & Sr. “International-level” High School complex. These schools are anchored by four churches and our nearby Happy Home for abandoned and distressed children.

Throughout our history, VOCA has been sustained through the prayers and generosity of individuals, many representing the second- and third-generation supporters in their families. Due to the sensitivity of our work, we communicate through monthly mailed newsletters and limited online information. We welcome you to join in this worthy and enduring cause, bringing Christ where His Name and saving power are unknown.

China prints three to four million legally approved Bibles to be sold to the Chinese population each year. There is no Bible distribution system among the forgotten 600 million rural poor--they have no funds to buy them. They fast and pray God will supply. Your gift will help them celebrate His answer! For $6.50USD, your donation purchases, transports, and verifies delivery of a Chinese Bible to rural believers. It will touch up to four people, who in turn, will bring two more to Christ.
Over 90% of China's rural preachers work in a lay capacity having no form of training or study materials. The Voice of China and Asia purchases legally printed 2,000 page Pastor's Study Bibles and trains rural preachers to use cross-references, Bible notes, timelines, maps, and concordance. Pastors are then taught to assemble sermons in a four-step process using their newly gained skills. Sponsored at a cost of $25 each, Chinese Pastor's Study Bibles contain material equivalent to one year of Bi
Voice of China and Asia empowers rural Chinese Preachers and lay workers to expand their ministry. Circuit-walking Chinese Preachers are hindered by unreliable or limited public transportation, walking distance, terrain, and inclement weather. At a cost of $1,200ea., motorcycles have expanded discipleship through in-home pastoral care, evangelized new counties, and reached distant mountain villages for Christ. Rural churches grow as pastors have transportation to all scheduled services.
Peniel Happy Home is a refuge for abandoned children and victims of poverty whose families are financially unable to feed and house them. Located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Happy Home becomes a loving refuge providing food, housing, education with a strong emphasis on Biblical involvement. Children are nurtured and taught the basics of small group leadership, music, and given a free bilingual education at nearby Yeollin School. Residents may stay until they are established in a vocation.
Since 1990, over 1,700 graduates from 60 denominations have graduated from the Peniel Seminary of the Voice of China and Asia in Busan, Korea. In an ultra-conservative tradition the Seminary is dedicated to the priority and inerrancy of the scriptures. Peniel Seminary is producing a second-generation of Pastors for our VOCA churches and 46 current Missionaries to the nations of Asia and Africa. Many serve where western influence is not welcome. Missionary and project support is welcomed.
Yeollin Primary Schools, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, currently serves 184 students in grades K-6. Through Christian Education students are transformed from poverty to prosperity in one generation. A bilingual emphasis places them in the top 10% of employable prospects in the nation. VOCA welcomes partnership in our Jr. & Sr. Christian High School campus currently under construction for students to continue their 7th to 12th grade education in an atmosphere of faith.
