Tax Day for Individuals Extended to May 17

On March 17, the IRS announced that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals will be automatically extended to May 17, 2021.  Individual taxpayers can also postpone federal income tax payments for the 2020 tax year due on April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021 without penalties and interest.

Individual taxpayers do not need to file any forms or call the IRS to qualify for this automatic federal tax filing and payment relief extension.

It is important to note the following:

  • This is for individual filers and does not include businesses at this time.
  • First quarter 2021 federal estimated tax payments are still due on April 15, 2021.
  • This deadline postponement to May 17, 2021 only applies to federal income returns. State filing and payment deadlines vary and are not always the same as federal. Taxpayers will need to check their state tax agencies for details applicable to their state.

The IRS does urge taxpayers who are due a refund to file as soon as possible. Most tax refunds associated with e-filed returns are issued within 21 days.
