Oral Arguments Scheduled in Housing Allowance Appeal

The battle for the Minister’s Housing Allowance continues, as oral arguments before the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals have been scheduled for Wednesday, October 24, 2018. The oral arguments are the next step in the appeal process which began in early February 2018 when Chicago-area pastors appealed the decision of a Wisconsin federal judge who ruled the housing exclusion to be unconstitutional. The filing of the appeal was followed by an opening brief on April 19 by The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, representing the Chicago pastors and other leaders. ECFA and other organizations also responded to the ruling by filing an Amicus Brief to the court detailing the longstanding history of the housing allowance and the impact the ruling could have on pastors and churches.
