Expedited Parking Tax Refunds Requested From IRS

In a letter dated January 8, 2020, the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee leadership (Richard E. Neal, Ways and Means Committee Chairman and John Lewis Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight) have called on the IRS to establish an expedited process for tax-exempt organizations to obtain refunds of unrelated business income on parking and transportation benefits provided to their employees.

This onerous tax was enacted in 2017 as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and was repealed in December 2019 as part of the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019.  The tax was unfair to charitable organizations and diverted both money and time away from the good work of these organizations.

The tax was repealed retroactively and an expedited refund process would allow churches and nonprofits to receive the refunds in a timely manner.
