A recent IRS Newswire (IR-2023-196) issued a warning stating that scam artists are taking advantage of global catastrophes by setting up fake charities to steal donations. Not only are donors having their well-intentioned gifts stolen from them, but their identities are also being compromised or stolen. These criminals are using a variety of tactics to accomplish this by setting up fake websites, using bogus caller IDs, or sending phishing emails.
As a donor to Christian organizations, we know how important it is to give wisely and generously to organizations that you can trust. Organizations applying for ECFA accreditation must submit various documents and receive coaching from an experienced professional to demonstrate their commitment to ECFA's Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship™.
Part of this accreditation includes submitting IRS documentation proving the organization's 501(c)(3) status. Once accredited, all members must follow and demonstrate their commitment to the ECFA Standards through an annual renewal and other in-depth accountability processes. To search for a trusted ECFA Church or Ministry, use the Find a Member tool on our website.
To assist donors who are looking for opportunities to give to a trusted church or ministry, ECFA has a free tool to help donors give with confidence and assurance to their desired cause. Donors can utilize ECFA's GiverConnect™ platform to search from a diverse group of 2,700 verified charities and ministries by topic (ex. "Disaster Relief") or by location (ex. "Middle East"). Additionally, donors can find verified charities by searching keywords or new member listings. This resource can be found by going to ECFA.org/GiverConnect.
