Ministry Description
JAARS exists to make Bible translation and language development possible, especially in the most remote and difficult places on earth. We do that by enabling locally-appropriate and sustainable solutions in transportation (equipment, training and support for aviation, maritime and land travel), technology (equipment, training and support for power, Internet access and remote communications), media (equipment and support for audio/video production/distribution), and training (pre- and on-field intercultural communications and spiritual vitality). As of 2015, JAARS supports roughly 70 partners worldwide who are engaged directly in Bible translation and/or language development, including but not limited to: SIL, Wycliffe US, and members of the Wycliffe Global Alliance.

ServantMatch®
In Africa, 1500 language groups still have little-to-no Scripture in their own language.Safe, affordable mission aviation is still necessary to support Bible translation. The same aircraft also enable hospitals and clinics to serve the most remote communities. SIL Cameroon currently supports 14 language projects directly. The current R44 helicopter will soon have to go out of service for up to 12 months for mandated overhaul work. This project will provide a helicopter upgrade or other options
Most language groups across the world that need Bible translation are oral societies. Translators know that audio Bibles, distributed alongside printed Bibles will best enable them to reach an entire language community for Christ. MegaVoice and similar audio players are solar powered, have built in speakers and provide easy navigation among Scripture portions. Your gift of just $35 can provide an audio player that gives access to God's Word in a format they understand best.
This recording studio in South Asia opened in 2014. It provides training, recording, editing and distribution for media products supporting Bible translation and Scripture use. The studio is meeting the recording needs for more than 70 Bible translation projects active in the area. This project will cover studio operating costs, including staff salaries, equipment like audio Scripture players, including the distribution of recorded materials.
In remote areas where Bible translation takes place, safety and timely transportation is the key. Air transportation is often the only viable way for translators to reach isolated villages. JAARS provides a 16 week pre-field orientation, offered twice a year at the JAARS Center in Waxhaw, NC to prepare new personnel to fly safely and handle mechanical problems in challenging locations. This includes recurrent training for pilots and mechanics. Your generosity helps make the training possible.
For more than 65 years, JAARS has helped make Bible translation possible. We support over 70 partner organizations around the world with transportation, technology, media and training. From aviation and intercultural training to research and development, advocacy and a range of other support services it is the very core of our work to make Bible translation possible. Your gift to Core Mission Fund supports our entire ministry.
Africa is home to a blend of rugged mountains, dense rainforests and over 500 languages. Most regional translation centers have poor internet and phone connections. By partnering with JAARS you can help provide Internet connections, local area networks and administrative computers at eight regional centers. These will help speed up the work of Bible translation and connect translation teams with outside resources.
Fifty-three translation centers are currently operating throughout Africa—and due to a lack of funds and equipment, many are struggling without an adequate Internet connection. With reliable connections and power sources, these centers could work more efficiently and provide more services.By partnering with JAARS you can help provide funding for equipment for more reliable internet connections impacting hundreds of current and future translation programs.
As Bible Translation grows in Africa, IT support is critical. IT Connect is a training and mentoring program designed to enhance the capabilities of those providing IT support. By partnering with JAARS you can help provide training in these locations: Yaounde, Cameroon, Ougadougou, Burkina Faso and Nairobi, Kenya.
By partnering with JAARS, you can help provide motorbikes for eight different African countries, enabling the translation team to better support language programs. With reliable transportation, they can offer on-site training, monitor teams' progress and get necessary items out to the translators.
Safe boat transportation is urgently needed among the eastern Island provinces of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. This 31 ft ocean going boat will be a test prototype to help determine the exact needs in Maritime transportation. This boat has a sturdy aluminum hull, diesel engine and jet drive. it will have a 2.5 ton capacity, 12-15 passengers plus cargo. Your help will make expanded Bible translation possible in this region.
This project provides hands on training that allows people to develop Scripture-based websites in their own language so people who who speak the language have access to God's Word. A regional training workshop can streamline the website development process. Most sites are launched within two weeks. As of 2016, our partner has rejoiced to see 514 websites go live with 176 others in the final stages of production or awaiting approval.
As Bible translation spreads to far-flung areas, water travel is critical. More than half of remaining translation programs are likely to require water transportation. By partnering with JAARS, you can reduce the risk and advance bible translation at the same time. Your gift will provide safety training and equipment such as life jackets, signal beacons and flares. This will provide less stress for translators and, during emergencies, the gear and know-how to survive.
Your gift can move Bible translation and Scripture distribution forward through the projects our partners need most. We often find great ways to help our partners around the world and can respond to their most pressing and strategic needs. These are usually projects that are crucial for Bible translation ands have a timing issue that requires immediate funding. We will post updates and photos to www.jaars.org so you can see exactly how your gift helped Bible translation.
