Two years ago, $235,000 was embezzled from the Fort Myers Rotary Trust Fund.
So why am I just telling you this now?
Because, like many nonprofit organizations similarly victimized, the Fort Myers Rotary Club hushed it up. Board members say they told the volunteer they wouldn't pursue charges or reveal his name if he repaid the money.
I'm not bound by that agreement.
Moreover, I think that this type of slap-on-the-wrist, we-know-you-made-a-mistake, let's-forgive-and-forget way of handling theft does a disservice to the community, makes nonprofits targets for crooks, and sends the message that if you steal from a nonprofit, you can get away with it.
