New #1 Reason Why Churches End Up in Court

Attorney Richard Hammar, in conjunction with Christianity Today’s Church Law & Tax, analyzed state appellate and federal court cases pertaining to churches and determined that 2016 marked a shift in the top reason churches end up in court. For the five previous years studied (2011-2015), sexual abuse of a minor was the most prevalent cause of litigation involving churches. In 2016, sexual abuse cases dropped to #2 while property disputes, which have been on the rise since 2013, claimed the #1 spot.
