Mid-Term Election Update

As a result of the mid-term elections, we expect Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) to take over as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, with Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) serving as the ranking member. Representative Neal has been an ally of nonprofit organizations during his tenure.

On the other side of the Capitol, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) is once again to become chairman of the Senate Finance Committee since Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) is retiring at the end of this year. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) is expected to remain as ranking member. Senator Grassley is remembered for his careful scrutiny of the nonprofit sector when he previously chaired the Senate Finance Committee.

Congress will tackle several policy priorities during the lame duck session. This includes the need to pass a spending bill before a significant portion of government funding expires on December 7. Other priorities include a farm bill, criminal justice reform, and judicial confirmations, to name a few.

ECFA will continue to monitor issues on Capitol Hill that are of interest to churches and nonprofits and provide updates in our News section.
