Contraception Mandate Outrages Many Religious Groups

February 7, 2012

The Administration recently announced that it will not be making an exemption for religious organizations that are religiously opposed to sterilization, contraceptives and emergency contraceptives that many consider to be abortifacients.  This is in response to a new requirement, a part of health care reform, that requires that employer-provided health insurance include coverage for contraceptives.

The new requirement does provide a narrow exclusion that would apply to some churches but would not extend to many religious organizations. Several organizations have indicated that they will not comply with this new requirement as it is a contradiction with their religious beliefs.

The government has indicated that it does not believe the drugs covered under this policy cause abortions, however, several Christian-centered groups have disagreed with this claim.

While this is not one of the identified public policy positions of ECFA, members organizations that would like to voice their opinion on this matter should contact their elected officials and the administration.
